Cooking/Water Gear For Philmont

Troop 589 Recommended Cooking & Water Gear For Philmont

Staying hydrated and ready to eat is a huge part of surviving - and thriving - on the trail. Each scout needs to carry enough water storage for themselves and a little extra for the crew, along with a few lightweight, durable items for eating and drinking. All cooking at Philmont is done as a crew, but you’ll still need your own plate, cup, and utensil, plus some Ziploc freezer bags to help with cleanup and trash. Below is a list of what to bring based on Troop 589’s experience.

Crew Water Bottle 1L (1)

Each scout carries one extra 1L bottle for crew use or to help a fellow scout who runs low. Simple and essential.

Water Bottles 1L (2)

Bring two personal bottles (Smartwater or Nalgene work great). These will be your go-to daily hydration containers.

Personal Hydration Bladder (2–3L)

A hydration bladder lets you drink easily while hiking. Make sure it’s 2 to 3 liters and fits well in your pack.

Plate (Must Be Able to “Sump”)

Your plate must allow for crew cleanup (sumping). The Fozzils Bowlz work perfectly - get the 2-pack and split with a buddy.

Spork / Spoon

Keep it simple and sturdy. A lightweight spork or long-handled spoon is all you need.

Cup (Optional)

Great for hot cocoa, cider, or coffee at camp. Not required, but nice to have if you enjoy warm drinks.

Ziploc Quart Freezer Bags (4–6)

These serve multiple uses - trash, leftover food, or even makeshift bowls. Bring freezer-grade for durability.
