Travel Gear For Philmont

In addition to your main pack, you’ll need a small day pack (25–35L) for the trip to and from Philmont. This bag is for car and train travel, and should hold the essentials you’ll need on the journey, including your Class A uniform, toiletries, and a change of clothes for the return trip. It’s also where you’ll keep anything you don’t need on the trail itself, like electronics or deodorant. Below is a list of what to pack in your travel day pack.

Class A Shirt:

Worn during travel and required for parts of the trip.

Class A / Solid Green Shorts (Mandatory):

These are part of the full uniform and required for official appearances and travel days.

Class B Crew Shirt

Wear for crew photos and during train travel.

Small Daypack (25–35L)

This is your go-to bag for car and train travel. It should fit all your travel essentials and be easy to carry. You'll use this before and after the trek—not on the trail itself.

Electronics & Charger:

Phones, earbuds, or e-readers for travel—these stay behind during the trek.

Money

Bring enough for meals on the road and souvenirs at Philmont or along the way.

Razor & Shaving Cream (Optional)

If you need it for the travel days only—don’t bring on the trek.

Soap / Shampoo

Small travel-size bottles for a shower before heading home.

Socks & Shoes

Wear sturdy shoes—no flip-flops. You’ll want something comfortable for travel and maybe for after the trek.

Toothbrush / Toothpaste

Keep these handy during travel.

Travel Bag for Backpack (Provided)

You’ll get a large duffel to pack your main hiking gear for the trip to and from Philmont.

Underwear (Clean – For Return Trip)

Have a clean set ready for the ride home.

Deodorant

Just for use before/after the trek—not allowed on trail due to scent and bear concerns.
